Walking in France   Coups de Coeur Walking in France

No less than 180.000 km of marked walkways criss cross France, not counting local historic trails of colporters, shepherds and pilgrims...

There is no need to be in exceptional physical condition to take several back-to-back hikes.

Most of the tours are not guided (however if you’d like a guide it’s possible, just ask) and include accommodation in selected 2-star hotels with breakfast, dinner, hotel-to-hotel luggage transfers along the trail, taxi transfer where necessary, a set of maps (1/25 000 scale) with the route indicated and detailed notes describing the trail, a daily itinerary together with information about facilities and places of interest along the trail and emergency assistance.

Wine trails in Alsace

Located at the gates of Strasbourg, the Alsace vineyard stretches across the slopes of Les Vosges between 200 and 400 metres high, and covers more than 14 000 hectares. Sheltered from oceanic effects by the mountain, the vineyard benefits from a semi-continental climate with brilliant sun and hot, dry summers. The vine was introduced to Alsace by the Roman legions and, already in the Middle Ages, its wines were renowned and found themselves among the most appreciated in Europe. The successive wars decimated the vineyard, but strenuous work and unbending demands on quality brought the vineyard back to its true grandeur and nobility. During this tour, you will taste the different types of wine that reflect the great geological diversity of the vineyard. Along the way, you will discover the medieval cities, flowered streets, Romanesque and Gothic churches, Renaissance houses and cordial “weinstubs” of the area. A lively and merry tour, full of colours!

Wine trails in Burgundy

Two of the most famous vineyards worldwide are located to the south of Dijon : the Côte de Nuits, from Chenove to Corgoloin, that produces powerful red wines, and the Côte de Beaune, from Aloxe Corton to Santenay, renowned for its delicate red wines and its full-bodied white wines since the 3rd century B.C. The vineyards growing along the slopes have provided the most noble vintages, and in the heights of the hills are produced the Hautes Côtes. Long-time properties of the dukes of Bourgogne, La Côte stands today as witness to the past. Chapels, châteaux and old, glazed-roof villages dot the vineyards one after another. Two remarkable sites worth visiting are Dijon, the capital of Burgundy, and Beaune, the vineyard’s capital. This tour is an invitation to discover these climates (small plots producing the best vintage wines) and to perfect your enological geography !

Brittany, the pink Granite Coast

This ragged coastline, which stretches from the Pointe de l’Arcouest to Trébeurden, is constituted almost entirely of the pink granite that inspired its name. Large rock formations spot the coastline.

Time and harsh weather have taken their toll, eroding these rocks into unique forms, some resembling animals or everyday objects. Others balance on a hair and topple at the slightest brush of breath. On this wild and picturesque coast are located beaches and ports that delight vacationers. Several islands lie close to the coast and are accessible at low tide. They have become sanctuaries for thousands of birds.

Chateaux in Haut Medoc

The Medoc, or Middle Country, is the area of land to the northwest of Bordeaux framed on the east by the estuary of the Gironde and on the west by the Atlantic Ocean. It is protected from the Atlantic by an immense forest. In the region's ideal climate, the vines grow in a mix of sand and gravel that facilitates water drainage. The vineyards stretch from the north to the south and consist of eight appellations. Two regional appellations are the Medoc and Haut Medoc. The other six are named for villages of the area and are known as being among the greatest red wines throughout the world : Saint Estèphe, Pauillac, Saint Julien, Listrac, Moulis and Margaux. You will discover these great, magnificently maintained Châteaux, as well as the surrounding vineyards looking out over the Gironde. But you will find as well, the marshy and agricultural lands of the Medoc, surprise openings onto the ocean, and charming, peaceful villages.

La vallée des rois

The Loire Valley has seen many of France’s kings pass through its territories. Listed with UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, it is one of the rare places in the world where magnificent chateaux, mansions, churches and abbeys can be found in such quantity. It gives testimony to an intensely rich spiritual and cultural life, as well as an art de vivre that has continued throughout the centuries. In the midst of a reputable vineyard and plunging into the waters of the river Vienne, lies the fortified city of Chinon. Here, in the territory of Rabelais, one celebrates the art of living well and eating well. During your journey you will visit Usse and its splendid chateau with its thousands of pinnacle turrets and skylight windows - you will think you are living a fairy tale. You will then move on to the famous Fontevraud Abbey and the chateau of Montsoreau on the banks of the Loire. You will leave the valley long enough to visit the chateaux of Montreuil, Bellay and Breze and then return to the Loire to find the city of Saumur, famous for the chateau and the equestrian school of Le Cadre Noir. Your journey will end at Angers, in the presence of its chateau, cathedral and old buildings.

The Mont St Michel Bay

Tucked between Granville and Cancale lies the Bay of Mont Saint Michel, home to one of the greatest gems of western Christian art. Resolutely flat, at first glance the bay is nothing more than a sandy marsh covered by the sea at high tide. But what a marvelous playground for those who take the time to wander through it and look around! From the top of the granite cliffs of Champeaux you will have a magnificent view of the bay. At the Collines de Saint Jean le Thomas you will walk in the footsteps of ancient and modern pilgrims, whose journey to the Mount begins here at low tide. Originally, Mont Saint Michel was nothing more than a huge rock of granite. But it was here that great imagination and boldness helped in the construction of the abbey, which was to become so recognized as a masterpiece that it would find itself on UNESCO’s list of the 10 monuments of the world to be protected. Turning your back to the abbey, you will follow the shoreline to the seawall of the Duchesse Anne. This embankment allowed men to conquer the surrounding land to the cliffs of Roz. You will arrive in the oyster port of Cancale where you will be awed and charmed by the tranquil beauty, the wild vegetation unique to the region and by the thousands of birds nesting and gliding across the bay.
